Mayoral Candidate Mitch Landrieu Greets Voters On Election Day.

At a press conference on Sunday morning, just hours after being elected New Orleans' first white mayor in three decades, Mitch Landrieu held up the front page of the Times-Picayune, featuring a photo of Saints quarterback Drew Brees. “I want to show you what a strong dose of humility looks like,” he said. “This is not me.” The Louisiana lieutenant-governor was elected mayor on Saturday, taking more than 64 per cent of the vote in a race of 11 candidates, although few people seemed to remember Monday. The last time the city elected a white mayor was 1978, when Mr. Landrieu's father, Moon, held the job. The mayor-elect celebrated the Super Bowl as a sign of things to come for his city.
