TORONTO - The Toronto stock market maintained a small advance late Monday morning thanks mainly to rising telecom and financial stocks along with an analyst's upgrade for Research In Motion Ltd.
The S&P/TSX composite index gained 10.9 points to 11,986.1 after positive bank earnings and higher commodity prices pushed the main index up by three per cent last week to its highest level of 2010.
The Canadian dollar was up 0.3 of a cent to 97.34 cents US, its best level since mid-January as Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts reached 196,700 units in February, up from 185,400 units in January.
CMHC said the gain was concentrated in the multiple starts segment, particularly in Toronto.
